Continuing on from part 1, part 2, part 3, and part 4 here is the addon list to the list of 48 movies that I made of some of my favourite sweet, romantic movies as a way to countdown to Vday to share the spirit of love vs the commercialism usually associated with Vday.
These addons were thought of after I made my original list of 48. One of the addon movies I watched this week which explains the late addition. This final list of 16 (in alphabetical order) makes my master list come to a total of 64 movies. I know there are more I like but 64 is a lot for now. I also know this list will grow as I watch more movies and there are several, I know are coming out on DVD and also coming to theatres, that looking promising to go on this list of sweet, romantic movies!
Thanks for letting me share my list with you all and hopefully it helps some people discover some new movies to check out! :)
The addons:
Across The Universe (2007) – Jim Sturgess, Evan Rachel Wood
I just saw this one this week…..and OMG, what a great movie with such an amazing soundtrack of 30 Beatle’s song covers that are used, for a large portion of the movie, instead of dialogue. If you don’t like Beatle’s songs, you might not like this although the songs are positioned to tell so much of the great story. If you do like Beatle’s songs, you will be in nirvana. Lots of lesser known songs are used in addition to some of the more well known songs. What can I say….ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE!!! :) Lots of interesting cameos, too!
The American President (1995) – Michael Douglas, Annette Bening
Just like in Notting Hill, falling love while in the spotlight is not easy task….and being the President of the United States means even more public scrutiny. Andrew is a widower President who ends up falling in love with environmental lobbyist Sydney but both their jobs do not make things easy on their relationship which is being closely watched, whether they like it or not. Balancing being a world leader with the regular guy wooing a girl is tough. Some choices we make, we have to make for the right reasons. His speech to the press near the end…..totally rocks!
Blast From the Past (1999) – Alicia Silverstone, Brendan Fraser
Due to cold war paranoia in the 60’s and mistaking a plane crash for a bomb, Adam’s father locks his family in a large bomb shelter he built in their backyard. Adam is born while they are inside the bomb shelter and spends the first 30 years of his life growing up in the bomb shelter. When he emerges at age 30, he doesn’t know anything of current world and still has the innocence and charm of the 1950’s and 1960’s from which his parents raised him. Adam meets Eve who is cynical and hard-hearted. Eve thinks Adam is too good to be true and a total freak……that is until she falls in love with him!
Bridget Jones Diary (2001) / Bridge Jones The Edge of Reason (2004) – Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth
When Bridget decides to take control of her life, she decides to chronicle it in a diary. Not exactly the smoothest girl around, she does manage to get herself into many situations, good and bad. Then she meets Marc Darcy (Colin Firth….with a poke at P&P) who she judges too quickly and too harshly. Lots of funny and sweet moments. Love it when Mark (Colin Firth) and Daniel (Hugh Grant) are duking it out in both films…like girls! And on The Edge of Reason DVD, look under special features for a clip of Bridget Jones interviewing Colin Firth as himself…….way too hilarious!
Connie and Carla (2004) – Nia Vardalos, Toni Collette
In a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, Carla and Connie ended up having to hide out after witnessing a murder. They end up hiding out at a gay cabaret club and pretending to be transvestites. Unfortunately Connie starts falling in love with the straight brother of one of her friends…..but he thinks she is a guy dressed as a woman and she can’t break cover. A bit “As You Like It”. Funny and sweet.
Gigi (1958) – Leslie Caron, Louis Joudan
Don’t ask me how I managed to forget this one. Another one of my all-time favourites. Gigi is an illegitimate daughter of an actress, in Paris of the 1800’s, who is raised by her grandmother to be a courtesan. Unfortunately, she falls in love with a wealthy bachelor who has known her since she was a child….and while her grandmother wants her to be his mistress, she wants to be his wife. Leslie Caron is wonderful….and Louis Jourdan is dashing!
Green Card (1990) – Gerard Depardieu, Andie MacDowell
George, a french musician, needs a green card to stay in America. Bronte desires to live in an amazing exclusive apartment building and to gain the approval of the acceptance committee she has told them she is married when she is not……and now she has to come with a husband to show them. Both George and Bronte need each other and enter into a marriage of convenience. They are both very different and have a hard time adjusting to each other. And only when US Immigration decides to investigate, if their marriage is real or not, do they realize how they really feel about each other.
Jerry Maguire (1997) – Tom Cruise, Renee Zellweger
Say what you will about Tom Cruise….and if you don’t, I will…he is annoying as hell…but this movie is good. Joke what you will about “you complete me” and “ you had me at hello”….but who doesn’t desire that kind of passion and devotion? I love the little guy, Ray.
Ladyhawke (1985) – Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfieffer
Lovers cursed, by a bitter and evil bishop, to spend eternity close-by but apart. She, a hawk by day…and he, a wolf by night. At sunset and sunrise they change, seeing but never being able to touch. It is up to Gaston, a petty little thief, to help them undo the curse before its too late.
Last of the Mohicans (1992) – Daniel Day Lewis, Madeleine Stowe
An amazing epic movie where a white man, who is an adopted son of the Mohicans, falls in love with daughter of an English officer while war among the Mohicans and Hurons rages on. Fabulous movie. It’s been a while since I have seen this and I should watch it again, soon.
The Man From Snowy River (1982) / Return to Snowy River (1988) – Tom Burlinson, Sigrid Thornton
Another one of my favourite from growing up. After Jim’s father dies, he is forced to leave his home in the misty mountains by the mountain men who say he must earn his right to live there among them. Jim leaves the mountains and goes to work for a wealthy rancher and falls in love with the rancher’s head-strong daughter, Jessica. When the rancher’s expensive new horse escapes to run with the wild horses, Jim must leave the ranch and go back to the mountains to prove his worth and find the horse as only a true mountain man can.
Overboard (1987) – Kurt Russell, Goldie Hawn
Joanna is rich and spoiled. Dean is a struggling carpenter and widower with 4 wild young sons. Of course they hate each other. But when Joanna falls off her rich yacht and ends up a Jane Doe with no ID and amnesia and her husband does not claim her, Dean decides to have a little fun and claim that she is his wife and mother to his boys. Not knowing who she is and definitely feeling like a fish out of water, Joanna must learn to contend with Dean’s wild household. When the truth comes out, lessons are learned on both sides and neither is the same. Cute, sweet, and fun.
The Princess Bride (1987) – Cary Elwes, Robin Wright Penn
Another all-time favourite about a girl who is engaged to an evil prince…but is in love with someone else whom she believes to be dead. Duels, pirates, giants, murder, adventure, and love….are among the many things that make this movie fun. It’s a satire but done so well.
Roxanne (1987) – Steve Martin, Daryl Hannah
Steve Martin takes a shot at being a modern day Cyrano de Bergerac. Feeling his large nose will prove him unsuitable as a suitor to a beautiful woman, a man writes poetry and has another man, handsome but dumb, to take his place using the poetry to woo her.
Sweet Home Alabama (2002) – Reese Witherspoon, Josh Lucas
Melanie couldn’t wait to leave Alabama and her red-neck husband she married just out of high school. Escaping to New York she becomes a successful fashion designer and falls in love with the mayor’s son. But before she can get married, she must return to Alabama to divorce her husband…..whom her fiancée knows nothing about. Confronting her past, she realizes that her past is not so easily discarded as she thought it would be.
Titanic (1987) – Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet
Has anyone not seen this? Aboard the fated Titanic, Jack meets Rose despite the separate of classes aboard the vessel. Jack is poor and traveling in the lower class cabins. Rose is a society girl who is engaged to a rich snob only so she can take care of her mother as she has no other family to take care of them. Jack and Rose strike up a friendship which turns to passion to the anger of her fiancee. Then the ship hits the iceberg….and threatens to doom them all as they all continue to battle each other and fight for survival.
THE END!!
Continuing on from part 1, part 2, and part 3 here are the last 12 movies from my original list, of 48 movies, that I made of some of my favourite sweet, romantic movies as a way to countdown to Vday to share the spirit of love vs the commercialism usually associated with Vday.
These 12 are not the last movies I am going to post as I have thought of some more movies since I made the original list in addition to seeing a new DVD this week that made the list. The addon list, which I will post as part 5 later today, is 16 more movies...bringing my list to a total of 64!
Without further ado, here is part 4 and the last part of my original list of 48.
Return to Me (2000) – Minnie Driver, David Duchovny
Grace’s mother died young of heart disease and now Grace, herself, waits for a heart donor and one night she receives one. After getting her new heart, she is able to do all the things she couldn’t do while growing up, like riding a bike. Bob is a recent widower and ends up meeting Grace at her grandfather’s restaurant. The 2 are instantly drawn to each other…..but fate has some interesting curve balls to throw them in this really, really sweet story that may prove that sometimes the ones we love never leave us. The supporting cast in this is really great and make it so much fun! Carroll O’Connor and Robert Loggia are great as her grandfather and great-uncle. Fabulous soundtrack full of classics like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.
Room with a View (1986) – Helena Bonham Carter, Julian Sands
Its been a while since I have seen this one. A sweet story about falling in love while traveling in Florence.
Secretary (2002) – James Spader, Maggie Gyllenhaal
This one may not appeal to everyone. If you are ok with a bit of kink then you will do good with this one. I think Maggie Gyllenhaal is great in this story that goes to show you that there is someone for everyone......and sometimes there are major lengths that people will go through to prove their love.
Something’s Gotta Give (2003) – Jack Nicholson, Diane Keaton
Harry and Erica cannot stand each other. She is a successful playright, divorced, and doesn’t date much. He is a chronic bachelor who only dates much younger woman…and in fact, he is dating Erica’s daughter. When they are forced to spend some time along together, they find themselves drawn to each other for different reasons. Jack and Diane are fabulous!
The Story of Us (1999) – Bruce Willis, Michelle Pfieffer
What makes up “your story” as a couple? After being married for 15 years, Ben and Katie aren’t sure anymore. They decide to try a trial separation while their kids are at summer camp…..during which they each remember the history that makes up their story. Poignant. Its not the just the good times that mold us…it’s the bad times as well.....and the combination of both that makes us who and what we are.
10 Things I Hate About You (1999) – Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles
A fun rework of the Taming of the Shrew. Allison Janney does a hilarious stint as the principal who’s writing an erotic novel in her spare time.
The Third Wheel (2002) – Luke Wilson, Denise Richards
Best date movie! Stanley has taken forever to ask Diana out and now that he has…and she said yes, he has the perfect date planned. Unfortunately, their date gets unexpected crashed by a third party (the third wheel) who seems like he might ruin their evening by his constant interruptions…..but sometimes blessings come in disguise. Sweet and very funny! Produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon who both appear on the film, as well. (Matt Damon has a funny cameo)
13 Going on 30 (2004) – Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo
When you are 13, becoming an adult just doesn’t come fast enough. Jenna rink wishes hard to grow up and on her birthday she gets her wish and suddenly wakes up as a 13 year old in a 30 year old body. While some things are great about her 30 year old life…..she sees the fruit of the path she was headed on at 13 and its not what she expected or wanted. What’s missing is Matt, her best friend at 13…..who wasn’t one of the cool kids at 13 but is the man she wishes for when she is 30….but its too late as he is marrying someone else. A sweet story about how the things we often wish for are not the things we need or really want in the end.
The Wedding Singer (1998) – Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore
Robbie gets stood up at the altar around the same time as he meets Julia. Unfortunately Robbie is tad down on love especially when he finds out that Julia is engaged to another guy…and that guy is a totally dick. A very funny movie and sweet love story with a great 80’s soundtrack. I never liked an Adam Sandler movie until I watched this one.
When Harry Met Sally (1989) – Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan
One of my most favourite movies of all time. I have seen this movie more than any other, I think. Its all about the ultimate dilemma about whether men and women can truly be friends or does the sex-thing get in the way? When Harry and Sally met at the end of their college years, they hated each other. When they bumped into each other a few years later, they tolerated each other. And then years later, they met again and became friends. I love love LOVE this movie! So funny and so sweet! Billy and Meg are awesome!
While You Were Sleeping (1995) – Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman
Lucy lives a lonely life. She has no family and not many friends. As work as a Chicago transit worker, she rescues a regular customer, Peter whom she has never spoken to, who falls off the tracks. At the hospital, while he is unconscious, a case of mistaken identity leads Peter’s family to believe that Lucy is Peter’s fiancée. Taken in by the family’s warmth and love, something she has never had, she plays along with the charade which is made easier (and more complicated) since Peter wakes up with amnesia and believes she is his fiancée. Things get more complicated when Lucy meets Peter’s brother and falls in love with him.
You’ve Got Mail (1998) – Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan
Kathleen and Joe are bitter enemies in the business world….who meet online and fall in love without knowing who each other is in real life. Complicated? Yes. Sweet love story? Yes.
...to be continued......today.....with part 5!!
Continuing on from part 1 and part 2, here are the next 12 movies on the list, of 48 movies, that I made of some of my favourite sweet, romantic movies as a way to countdown to Vday to share the spirit of love vs the commercialism usually associated with Vday.
As I said in part 1, there is no ranking system so they are listed in alphabetical order (on the master list) and I am sharing 12 a day.
The Mistress of Spices (2005) – Aishwarya Rai, Dylan McDermott
Being a “mistress of the spices”, Tilo is a mystical healer and in order to keep her powers she must never leave her shop, never let anyone touch her skin, and never use the spices to benefit herself. That is all fine and dandy until she meets a man who she can’t help but start falling in love with and tests her commitment to the spices to which she is bound.
Monsoon Wedding (2002)
Romance and family dramas surrounding a Punjabi arranged marriage during the monsoon season.
Moulin Rouge (2001) – Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor
Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous…..is all I can say about this movie. Love the cast, love the music, love everything except how the story must tragically end. Nicole and Ewan have great chemistry in this….not to mention great sets of pipes!
Music & Lyrics (2007) – Hugh Grant, Drew Barrymore
Its amazing how some people bring out the best in you. Alex has been content living in the past until Sophie shakes up his world. A fun and quirky romance. Hugh and Drew are great together!
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) – Nia Vardalos, John Corbett
This was based on Nia Vardalos’s one woman show…which was seen by Rita Wilson (Mrs. Tom Hanks) who helped Nia turn it into this movie. It was a sleeper hit and I remember seeing it in the theatre before it was discovered by mainstream audiences. It’s the only movie where everyone on the audience was seriously laughing out loud. I think I snorted my popcorn in a few places. I think everyone can relate to their family at some point in the film, especially if you have been married. In addition to being funny, the romance between Toula and Ian is so very sweet! (Nia’s real-husband is in the film….can you spot him?)
Never Been Kissed (1999) – Drew Barrymore, Michael Vartan
Ever want to go back and redo parts of your life? Josie gets the chance to relive high school when she has to back to high school as an undercover reporter. Thanks to her brother she gets to erase her “Josie-grosie” past but unfortunately ends up hurting a few people she cares about along the way. I just love the ending of this movie….and seriously, one of the best kisses!
The Notebook (2004) – Rachel McAdams, Ryan Gosling
Everyone loves a love story. A older man is reading a love story, out of a notebook, to an older woman. It’s a passionate tale…..and its her tale. The end of this always gets me.
Notting Hill (1999) – Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant
Another sweet, fun movie. I, personally, love the way Hugh Grant can delivery those funny lines. And who doesn’t want the cast of characters who make up his circle of friends in this movie?
One Fine Day (1996) – Michelle Pfieffer, George Clooney
What day wouldn’t be fine if you were spending it with a young George Clooney? Two opposite single parents end up having to spend the day together as they try to balance their home, kids, and work.
The Phantom of the Opera (2004) – Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum
Unrequited love, Andew Lloyd Webber style! An amazing and lavish version of this sad and haunting tale. A great cast! Emmy Rossum has the singing voice of an angel.
Pretty in Pink (1986) – Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy
Yes…another 80’s movie! Differences of peer pressure and status threaten the budding romance between Andie and Blane…..in addition to all the other things about being a teen-ager in high school! Sweet!
Pride & Prejudice (1995) – Colin Firth, Jennifer Ehle
This, in my opinion, is the best version of P&P and the one that does it the most justice. Its long (6 hours) but such a great cast of characters and so well done. There is so much depth that is needed to really follow and show the whole story that it cannot be done in just 90-120 minutes. If you don’t believe me, ask my husband who decided to check it out and concurs with me. We both think Colin Firth is the best Mr. Darcy ever!
...to be continued......tomorrow......for part 4 of 4!!!
Continuing on from part 1, here are the next 12 movies on the list, of 48 movies, that I made of some of my favourite sweet, romantic movies as a way to countdown to Vday to share the spirit of love vs the commercialism usually associated with Vday.
As I said in part 1, there is no ranking system so they are listed in alphabetical order (on the master list) and I am sharing 12 a day.
The Cutting Edge (1992) – DB Sweeney, Moira Kelly
One of my all-time favourites for witty and biting repartee! Some absolutely fabulous lines in the movie as these 2 characters hack on each other all the way through.....until they realize that they are only good for each other. A classic!
Diary of a Mad Black Woman (2005) – Kimberley Elise, Shemar Moore
Yes, another movie that I almost dismissed seeing as I prematurely judged it for being the usual cliché. I ended up seeing it after a friend, who is not a fluffy or cliché kind of guy at all, recommended seeing this. Of course, it had some cliché in it…but its good. This was also my first time experiencing the character Madea, who is just too hilarious! Tyler Perry makes good movies!
Emma (1996) – Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeremy Northam
Ah….Jane Austin! Emma is a classic and this version is lots of fun. A great cast! Jeremy Northam is great as the ever patient and dashing Mr. Knightley.
Ever After (1998) – Drew Barrymore, Dougray Scott
I feel like such a fluffy girl for loving this movie….but I do, so there! I think this a fabulous remolding of the Cinderella story. Anjelica Huston plays the nasty stepmother, with great one-line zingers, to perfection. And Dougray Scott is yummy! :)
50 First Dates (2004) – Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore
How can you not love a man who is so persistent to keep trying with a girl who has no short term memory and can’t remember who he is every morning. It kind of reminds me a bit of Groundhog day where he tries to play it different each day. Of course, its so sappy romantic what happens when she cuts him out of her life…and her subconscious won’t forget him, even though she consciously has no clue who he is.
For the Love of the Game (1999) – Kevin Costner, Kelly Preston
I am not a Kevin Costner fan but I do love this movie for how it reveals what is truly important to us….but is so blind to us realizing it until its almost too late. By sharing our joys with the people we love, we make them double.....but what happens when there is no one to share them with?
Griffin & Phoenix (2006) – Amanda Peet, Dermot Mulroney
Interesting twist on the “terminally ill” doomed love story. Amanda and Dermot are great!
Hitch (2005) – Will Smith, Eva Mendes
I love Eva Mendes! She is so sassy! Great, fun movie about a man who can teach but cannot seem to make what he teaches happen in his real life romance. The hilarious Kevin James steals almost every scene he is in……and also shows us how the most seemingly unlikely couple are perfect for each other!
I’m With Lucy (2002) – Monica Potter
Ah, the joys of dating.....and blind dates! Lucy want to find the right guy but cannot decide as she dates one guy after the other. And what she thinks she wants is not what she really needs….or in the end, really and truly wants. A sweet story, in my opinion. And the guy she ends up with?......200 points if you can guess the movie he is most known for! (and don’t ruin it by mentioning it in the comments here…otherwise you spoil the movie for others.)
Ira & Abby (2007) – Chris Messina, Jennifer Westfeldt
This one just came out on DVD and is really good. A funny, yet thoughtful, quirky romance between 2 people who decide to get married a few hours after meetng. While the plot line seems simple sounding….the movie is not all you expect it to be as it twists and turns making you wonder how it’s is all going to wrap up by the end. A smart commentary on love and marriage.
Just Like Heaven (2005) – Mark Ruffalo, Reese Witherspoon
Ever wondered what would happen if you fell in love with a ghost? What if they weren’t a ghost at all? A sweet story that makes you wonder about fate.
Lucky 7 (2002) – Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Patrick Dempsey
A sweet story about how life doesn’t always go according to plan and you just have to learn to colour outside the lines! Another good example of learning not to judge a book by its cover.....as Amy learns about Peter.
....to be continued......tomorrow.......for part 3 of 4!!
A couple of weeks ago, in anticipation of Vday coming up and in wanting to share the spirit of love rather than the corporate commercialistic mentality of it, electric firefly posted a few movies that she liked that she considered sweet love stories. I hadn't seen any on her list although some of them were ones I had wanted to see. This got me to thinking about the kind of romantic stories that I liked and the kind of sweet, romantic movies/stories that I keep coming back to. And so I started jotting them down.
I am a big movie buff and have a broad range of tastes. I do like cheesey and cliche stories....but not all. I do like quirky, sweet, stories....but not every one. Movies and stories are always personal and I think that each of us likes different things about different movies.....and we don't always pick up on the same things that speak to us as individuals. I am a sappy, sentimental, romantic person at heart so I probably am more mushy than a lot of people.
When I made the list of the romantic movies that I loved, I originally made it bigger than it was. As I love movies, it was easy to mistake a great movie with romance in it (i.e. girl and boy get together) for being a romance. Just because girl and boy get together does not make a story/movie about romance or make it a sweet love story. So some of my favourite movies ended up getting the toss from the list because, when it came down to it, they were cool movies but not really romantic or sweet love stories.
As I have made this list (although probably forgot some), I thought I would share them in the spirit of Vday coming up this week. I must warn that its a list of 48!! But don't worry as I am going to share it in 4 parts over 4 days. 48 movies are a lot to share at once! :) And if I remember any others, I might add them in at the end.
Since I don't really have a ranking system and I often like different movies depending on my mood, I put the movies in alphabetical order.
Here are the first 12:
A Circle of Friends (1994) – Chris O’Donnell, Minnie Driver
A little saccharin….but sometimes something sweet is what you want! I like Minnie Driver in this and how her character sticks to her guns about certain things. Plus Chris O’Donnell is always a cutie!
Always (1989) – Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter
I haven’t watched this one for a long time but its one of my favourites. I love how these 2 know each other so well. Him buying her the “girl” clothes is a great scene! And the one where he finally lets her go……it gets me everytime! (and this movie made me discover the song by The Platters “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” which is such a great romantic song!)
A Lot Like Love (2005) – Ashton Kutcher, Amanda Peet
I like the way they show progression of the characters lives, maturity, and how they learn to appreciate each other and see what was there all along. I particularly like how goofy they can be together. Sometimes you have to set something free….in order to really claim it as yours.
Anne of Green Gables (whole series – 1985, 1987, 2000) – Megan Follows, Jonathan Crombie
Being Canadian, I grew up with this story and when I was a young teen, they came out with the first part of this series on TV and then we had to wait a few more years for the next ones to come out on TV. (Now its all on DVD) I was growing up at the same time as the characters in the movie so it really resonated with me. If you have read the books, but not seen the movies, you will find they have mixed a lot of things up to make it easier for the screen which I think works. I love the movies and I love the books. Kevin Sullivan did such a fabulous job with these movies and the acting is fabulous. I love that they tried to bring back the characters in the 2000 sequel but that movie is not from the books and was made to satisfy the fans who wanted more Anne and Gilbert (and you all know how I feel about Anne and Gilbert! LOL!). The 2000 sequel does not really add up, with respect to being historically accurate, to the timing of the original series, but it is quite enjoyable if you forget about such details.
An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) – Richard Gere, Debra Winger
An 80’s classic! I think this and Amercian Gigolo were the movies that shot Richard Gere to stardom. And I think its that ending scene that set the standard which many movies have copied!
A Walk in the Clouds (1995) – Keanu Reeves
The supporting cast in this movie really make it, particularly Anthony Quinn as Victoria’s grandfather, Don Pedro, who is such a hoot! What makes this one special isn’t so much just the romance of one couple….but about the romance of family, if that makes sense? I think its a very sweet story.
A Walk to Remember (2002) – Mandy Moore, Shane West
I had originally dismissed ever seeing this movie because it looked too cliché….the usual bad boy gets with good girl kind. And while it does have that cliché part to it, that cliché part is not what this movie is really all about. There is more to this movie than the usual cliché and I won’t ruin it for you if you haven’t seen it. I am glad that I didn’t fully dismiss this as I would have missed out.
Because I Said So (2007) – Diane Keaton, Mandy Moore
Another kind of saccharin type of movie…but I like it because both mother and daughter find romance in this. And Diane Keaton can be so hilarious sometimes. (And Gabriel Macht, aka Mr. Jacinda Barrett, is totally adorable as Johnny!)
Before Sunrise (1994) / Before Sunset (2004) – Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy
I had always liked Before Sunrise…but it had felt unfinished so I was glad when they finally came out with Before Sunset. Its finding love through conversation……and smart conversation at that. Great writing that is made even better by the performances of Ethan and Julie.
Bubble Boy (2001) – Jake Gyllenhaal, Marley Shelton
This one is just toooo fun! I had always heard about this one (mainly the Seinfeld joke) but had never seen it. I saw it last year and it really was fun. Jake is great in this. Gotta love a man who will travel cross country, in a bubble suit, to find the woman he loves.
Coyote Ugly (2000) – Piper Perabo, Adam Garcia
Great music, fun dancing on top a bar, and a cute Adam Garcia. Sometimes you just feel like watching something fun that requires no brain power to enjoy it! (kind of like having a craving for some cotton candy at a fair)
Crossing Delancey (1988) – Amy Irving, Peter Riegert
Another great movie from the 80’s. And another great lesson in not judging a book by its cover. Isabelle keeps dodging Sam because of her judging “appearances” until she discovers that what she thought he was all about…is all wrong. Great kiss he lays on her near the end!
.....to be continued.....tomorrow.....for part 2 of 4!
I've been hearing many of my neighbours and friends going through the issues of broken hearts lately :(
If you are one of those nursing a broken heart.....as you work on moving on, here is a little something for you from Mr. Nicole Kidman:
Be a Queen.
Dare to be different.
Be the kind of woman who, in the face of adversity, will continue to embrace life and walk fearlessly toward the challenge.
Take it on!
Be a truth seeker and rule your domain, whatever it is - your home, your office, your family - with a loving heart.
Be a Queen.
Be tender.
Continue to give birth to new ideas and rejoice in your womanhood.
My prayer is that we will stop wasting time being mundane and mediocre.
We are daughters of God - here to teach the world how to love.
It doesn't matter what you've been through, where you come from, who your parents are - nor your social or economic status.
None of that matters.
What matters is how you choose to love, how you choose to express that love through your work, through your family, through what you have to give to the world....
Be a Queen.
Own your power and glory.

There are some days that live in your mind clear as a bell. For a lot of people, in North America, that day is September 11, 2001. Almost all those people’s memories are about the terrorist attacks in America that fateful morning. My memory of that day wasn’t about plane
