Battle of the covers: Landslide
Last week, when I posted some BNL covers and in the comments, a lot of people mentioned some other covers they like that were redone.
A couple of people mentioned the the song Landslide, which was originally done by Fleetwood Mac. Jayd likes the Smashing Pumpkins cover of the song better than the original. Lostdwarf disagrees and doesn't know how anyone could do better than the original.
Well... I shall see your Fleetwood Mac and your Smashing Pumpkins....and I will raise you some Dixie Chicks! :)
In my opinion, all 3 versions sound pretty much the same, although the Dixie Chicks, obviously, add some harmony which I like. And I am also still a big fan of the original.
Whenever someone re-does a cover, I like it when they actually do something fundamentally to make it their own, rather than just having a different singer sing it as is the case here where no one has really changed anything. BNL did a slight changeup with Lovers in a Dangerous Time which is why I like it so much and still like the original. I am super drained right now so I can't think of any other examples, but there are lots. Perhaps, if people pass suggestiions to me, we can make this a regular monday feature?
Anyhoo, here are all 3 versions for our fun little battle of the bands! haha! Please take a listen to all 3 versions.
I would be curious to know what you all think. This is just for fun, so please everyone play nice! Afterall, music is subjective....its all about personal preference. There are no right or wrong answers here.
First up, the original:
Next, Smashing Pumpkins:
And lastly, the Dixie Chicks:
Comments
I like the Dixie Chicks version.
And I like pretty much every cover of a Bob Dylan song I've heard more than the originals. I love his lyrics, but I can't get past his voice.
Yes, I know that's heresy.
I have to go with the Dixie Chicks on this one....their version makes me want to tap my foot or sing along or something!!..it just gets my attention much more than the others..
I love the harmony they've added!!
although the Smashing Pumpkins are not bad, I was a fan in high school
My order: SP, FM, DC
And here is why...
First, I think the levels on the SP song are the best. Also, I think I digg the subtle stylistic choices of the SP song and instrumentation (it is much less twangy and country/folksy sounding). Also, I feel a lot more emotion expressed by Corrigan. I hear more *hurt* and *doubt*. The others are singing it, and singing it well ... but to me, Corrigan is *feeling* it and singing about it.
Finally, I think that I can identify more with a male voice.

First off I have to say this song (especially the lyrics) is so powerful to me. At this midlife stage (is 40 midlife, or is 40 the new 30?) in particular, it really hits home. Excuse me, after hearing that song four times, I need a tissue...
But I really got chills when I checked out the Tori Amos version. Could it be that it was video performance, so I could see her expression? Maybe that wasn't a fair comparison? I should have listened with my eyes closed. Still, I agree with jayd. I'd rank SP first, TA second, and FM third. Can't help it...Billy Corrigan sings with such raw emotion, it just hits me a little deeper than the others.
Thanks Cactina for adding in the Tori Amos version. I was not familiar or aware of her version. Her version is very haunting....
